Discipline–Based Education Research (DBER) is a scholarly approach to teaching and learning from within the specific discipline (i.e. looking at teaching and learning in physics). Problems that DBER looks to address may include: using scientific methods to assess the effectiveness of teaching and to document the dynamics of learning, using the findings to inform teaching and drive course reform. These problems are best understood from the perspective of the discipline. FIU has several groups actively engaged in DBER, and the research they are engaged in has been instrumental in the development of the Learning Assistant program, the Noyce Scholarship program, and the new teacher preparation programs.
